IVAM concludes Cristina de Middel exhibition ‘Apoteosi Now’
The Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM) is concluding the exhibition ‘Apoteosi Now’ this Sunday, October 11. The project by photographer Cristina de Middel, curated by Iván de la Nuez, features 252 images designed to challenge how audiences consume and process the current oversaturation of visual media.
De Middel, a prominent figure in contemporary photography and president of Magnum Photos, has previously received the National Photography Prize and the Princess of Asturias Award. The exhibition intentionally lacks a central theme, narrative sequence, or connecting thread, using only color as an organizational principle to create a sense of confusion and activate the viewer's critical thinking.
The installation utilizes a sustainable, artisanal approach, employing reused cardboard boxes rather than traditional formal gallery displays. Notable elements include a cardboard tower connecting the two levels of the hall, which serves as a reference to the Tower of Babel and precarious architectures of the Global South.
