Ivan Herrera emerges as top catcher target at MLB trade deadline

As the August 3 trade deadline approaches, catchers have become the most scarce and sought‑after position in Major League Baseball. Six teams—including the Yankees, Dodgers, Rays, Red Sox, Rangers and Mets—are actively scouting for a replacement behind the plate.

The St. Louis Cardinals, unusually deep at catcher, hold two notable players: Panamanian prospect Ivan Herrera and Venezuelan Pedro Pagés. Both will be eligible for arbitration after the season, making them attractive trade assets. Herrera, praised for his offensive upside, has drawn particular attention as the market’s premium catcher.

Other potential targets mentioned are Luis Torrens (defensive specialist) and Francisco Álvarez (offensive option). Their contracts and arbitration eligibility also factor into teams’ calculations as they weigh what they can acquire for limited returns.
