Ivan Lončar – Žan, prominent Slavonian artist, passes away

Ivan Lončar – Žan, a prominent Croatian artist, illustrator, comic book creator, and cultural figure, has passed away at the age of 76. Born in Otok in 1950, Lončar left a significant mark on the cultural life of Slavonia, particularly in Vinkovci and Otok.

His diverse artistic career spanned painting, illustration, comics, poetry, and scenography. He was known for his deep connection to the Slavonian landscape, frequently depicting the Bosut River and local ethnographic traditions. His work was exhibited globally across five continents, including major cities such as Stuttgart, Berlin, Amsterdam, Washington, and Vancouver.

Lončar’s artistic development was influenced by notable figures such as sculptor Vanja Radauš and painter Ivan Domac. Throughout his career, he organized over 75 solo exhibitions—including a recent retrospective titled ‘Retrospektiva – Povijest pisma i pošte’—and participated in more than 1,300 group exhibitions.

Beyond his visual art, he was a dedicated cultural worker who founded the library in Otok and co-founded several local associations and festivals, including the Vinkovci Comic Salon. He was a recipient of the ‘Grb Grada Vinkovaca’ gold plaque for his exceptional contribution to the city's cultural development.
