Ivan Portnykh trial over Varna Lake pollution postponed

A court hearing regarding the pollution of Varna Lake has been postponed to October 26, 2026, by the Varna District Court. The delay occurred due to the absence of defense attorney Menko Menkov, who is currently abroad.

The case involves former Varna Mayor Ivan Portnykh and concerns an accident involving a pressure pipeline in Varna Lake. Portnykh has categorically denied any personal responsibility for the incident, stating, “I have absolutely nothing to do with this pipe. I was not involved in its design, construction, or financing.” He noted that the infrastructure was installed years before he entered politics or served as mayor.

Portnykh further asserted that during his administration, all necessary steps were taken to address the issue, including legal action against the Greek company responsible for the construction, which resulted in a court ruling in favor of the municipality. He also denied allegations of delayed response, claiming that once the water utility operator reported a problem, all relevant institutions were immediately notified and coordinated on-site.
