Ivan Šreter: Calls for answers regarding 1991 abduction

On the 35th anniversary of the abduction of Dr. Ivan Šreter, calls have been made for answers regarding his fate. Dr. Šreter, a physician, hospital director in Lipik, and peace advocate, was kidnapped by rebel forces in Kukunjevac on August 18, 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence.

Petar Škorić has publicly challenged Milorad Pupovac, president of the SDSS, demanding information about Šreter’s whereabouts. Škorić alleges that Pupovac was involved in prisoner exchanges and, according to testimonies from former officials, possessed information regarding Šreter’s tragic fate but has remained silent for decades.

Dr. Šreter was known for advocating coexistence between Croats and Serbs and for his role as head of the Regional Crisis Staff for Western Slavonia. Despite his abduction and subsequent murder, his remains have never been found. The Croatian Parliament has designated August 18 as the National Day of Peacekeeping in his memory.
