Ivan Vazov National Theatre to premiere Fanny and Alexander in 2027

The Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia will host the premiere of a theatrical adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s iconic film “Fanny and Alexander” on January 19 and 20, 2027. Directed by Swedish director Linus Tunström, the production marks his first project in Bulgaria.

Tunström, who previously staged the work at the Uppsala City Theatre in 2012, selected the cast following a February audition process involving approximately 50 actors from the National Theatre troupe. The final cast includes Velislav Pavlov, Radina Kardzhilova, Alexander Tonev, Valentin Ganev, and others.

The play explores themes of family, love, freedom, power, and childhood, following the lives of two children from the Ekdahl family as they navigate dramatic life changes following their father's death and their mother's subsequent marriage to a despotic bishop.
