Ivanna Bonilla Oliva sworn in as new Guatemalan deputy
The Congress of the Republic of Guatemala has sworn in Ivanna Bonilla Oliva as a new deputy, filling the vacancy left by the death of Juan Ignacio Quijada Heredia. Bonilla Oliva will join the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) party bloc.
Bonilla Oliva, a lawyer and notary with specializations in public policy and business administration, previously ran as a candidate for the Chiquimula department during the 2023 general elections. She currently serves as the UNE coordinator for the eastern region. In her new role, she is expected to focus on creating opportunities for women and youth.
Her incorporation adds one vote to the UNE bloc, which is currently led by Inés Castillo. The party remains one of the three major blocs in the legislature.
