Iván Carvajal, prominent Ecuadorian poet and philosopher, dies at 78

Ecuadorian poet, philosopher, and essayist Iván Carvajal has died at the age of 78. His passing was confirmed by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (Flacso Ecuador), which described him as one of the most prominent Ecuadorian intellectuals of his time.

Born in 1948 in San Gabriel, Carchi, Carvajal dedicated over five decades to literary creation and philosophical thought. His poetic works include titles such as ‘Paraje’, ‘Los amantes de Sumpa’, ‘Del Avatar’, and ‘Ópera’. His influence extended internationally, with his work appearing in anthologies across Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Bolivia.

In addition to his writing, Carvajal was a long-standing academic, teaching for nearly forty years at institutions including the Universidad Central del Ecuador, the Pontificia Universidad Católica, and the Universidad de Cuenca. He was a recipient of the Aurelio Espinosa Pólit Prize, a prestigious literary award in Ecuador. The Quito Secretariat of Culture noted that his legacy will remain part of the nation's cultural memory.
