Iván Cepeda calls for social mobilization in Colombia
Colombian Senator Iván Cepeda has called for social mobilization and peaceful protest in response to recent government actions. Cepeda criticized President Abelardo de la Espriella’s announcement regarding upcoming negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to address the nation's fiscal situation.
The opposition leader warned that IMF debt often requires structural state changes and privatizations that could lead to impoverishment for middle-class and vulnerable populations. Additionally, Cepeda challenged the administration's presentation of security achievements, arguing that recent police operations are routine rather than unprecedented successes.
Cepeda also raised concerns regarding human rights and police violence, citing the recent deaths of two youths—one in Bogotá following a police intervention—and the assassination of a community leader in La Macarena, Meta.
