Breast cancer advocacy calls for improved rehabilitation and lifelong screening in Sweden
In Sweden, advocates are calling for significant improvements in breast cancer care, focusing on both rehabilitation and preventative screening. The Breast Cancer Association highlights a critical gap in post-treatment support, noting that in Östergötland, 75 percent of patients report not being offered rehabilitation. This lack of support affects patients dealing with long-term issues such as pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties.
Additionally, the organization Centerkvinnor is campaigning against what they describe as age discrimination in cancer screening. Currently, free mammography invitations in Sweden cease at age 74, despite approximately 2,000 women over the age of 75 being diagnosed with breast cancer annually. The group is demanding lifelong, fee-free screening and increased research resources for diseases affecting older women.
