Ivo Josipović warns of rising Ustaše relativization in Croatia

Former Croatian President Ivo Josipović has expressed deep concern regarding the increasing glorification of the Ustaše movement in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In recent interviews, Josipović criticized the current Croatian government under Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, suggesting that theories regarding the “double connotations” of Ustaše greetings have facilitated the movement's entry into the public sphere.

Josipović noted that the strategy involves attempting to rebrand the Ustaše movement as a patriotic one while portraying Partisans as criminals and traitors. He cited several indicators of this trend, including school textbooks that relativize historical crimes, the glorification of Ustaše leaders on the internet, the increasing presence of Ustaše symbols in public spaces, and the destruction of monuments related to the National Liberation War.

He also addressed recent incidents, such as a Torcida parade in Split and a concert by Thompson, where extremist sentiments were observed. Josipović criticized politicians for acting opportunistically and avoiding firm stances on these issues due to fears of losing voter support. He emphasized that educating youth on anti-fascist values is essential for maintaining the foundations of modern democratic society and the European Union.
