Ivybridge railway station platform extension study nears completion

A feasibility study to determine if platforms at Ivybridge railway station can be extended is nearing completion. The study, which is currently undergoing final costing, aims to establish whether longer platforms would allow additional services, such as CrossCountry trains, to stop at the station.

South Hams District Council has contributed £20,000 toward the feasibility work. South West Devon MP Rebecca Smith noted that current platform lengths have been a primary reason why certain services do not stop at the station. According to Smith, 29 CrossCountry services and 16 GWR services currently pass through or stop at the station, and increasing the number of calls could significantly benefit local residents.

Recent data shows a 16 per cent increase in station usage, with nearly 137,000 entries and exits recorded during 2024/25. A local transport survey indicated that 94 per cent of respondents desire more frequent train services at Ivybridge.
