Iwatsuki students collaborate with local confectioners on new sweets
Students at the Clark Memorial International High School SMART Saitama campus are advancing the ‘HINABAKO’ community development project through the creation of regional confectionery. Working with local Japanese confectionery shops, students have developed eight different product ideas, including ‘Yaki-mochi Sand’ and snacks featuring Iwatsuki’s specialty, water chestnut (kuwai).
Local professionals from shops such as Fujimiya Seika, Tanakaya Honten, Akizuki, and Isozakie Souan have provided practical advice to the students regarding product design and manufacturing. The project aims to deepen student learning through community collaboration. Following the completion of prototypes in late October, the project will also include an international exchange event in December to address diverse perspectives, such as dietary restrictions related to religious beliefs.
