IWC luxury watch faces sale restrictions on Bares für Rares

During an appearance on the ZDF show ‘Bares für Rares’, a limited edition IWC Portugieser watch was subject to a sales ban regarding its strap. Expert Sven Deutschmanek removed the lizard leather strap from the timepiece before conducting his appraisal, explaining that the material is prohibited from trade under the Washington Convention (CITES), which has regulated the international trade of endangered species since 1975.

The watch, part of a limited edition of 1,000 pieces, had been inherited by a contestant and kept unused for approximately 25 years. Due to the long period of inactivity, the watch required a service revision. Additionally, the absence of the original box and purchase documentation prevented it from being sold as a ‘full set’. While comparable models can fetch around 13,000 euros, the expert valued this specific piece between 7,000 and 9,000 euros due to its condition and missing accessories.
