Moscow awarded 2030 Weightlifting World Championships

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has selected Moscow to host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships. This marks the first time since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine that an Olympic sport federation has awarded a world championship to Russia.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from international officials. Ukrainian Sports Minister Matwij Bidnyj called the move an “unacceptable signal” and stated that Ukrainian athletes will not travel to Moscow. Stian Grimseth, president of the Norwegian Weightlifting Federation, expressed shock, noting that a country engaged in an invasion war should not host such events, citing safety concerns for athletes.

Russia has welcomed the decision. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Sacharowa stated that sport should not be politicized and noted that the lifting of bans on international competitions in Russia aligns with the Olympic spirit. The IWF decision follows a trend of international bodies and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gradually easing sanctions on Russian and Belarusian athletes.
