European Cities Plant Trees and De‑impermeabilise Soil to Cool Urban Heat Islands

Municipalities are expanding green infrastructure to combat rising urban temperatures. In Ixelles, Belgium, officials have planted about sixty new trees and installed permeable soil solutions such as infiltration pits to mitigate heat‑island effects and manage heavy rainwater. French cities and suburbs are also adopting a mix of measures—including tree corridors, reflective paving, cool roofs, water features and public cooling spaces—to lower nighttime temperatures and protect vulnerable residents, especially the elderly.

In parallel, a passive‑cooling building designed by Austrian architect Dietmar Eberle, known as “2226”, maintains indoor temperatures of 22‑26 °C year‑round without active heating or air‑conditioning, using thick insulated walls, light‑colored façades and automated night‑ventilation. Meanwhile, a report on Delhi’s densely populated slums describes how inadequate housing traps heat, leaving residents uncomfortable even after sunset and highlighting the need for official heat‑wave disaster declarations.

These initiatives illustrate how cities across Europe and beyond are seeking both landscape‑based and architectural solutions to reduce heat‑related health risks as climate‑driven heatwaves become more frequent and intense.
