Nigeria political leaders exchange criticisms ahead of 2027 elections
Leading Nigerian political figures have engaged in a series of public exchanges regarding leadership capability and economic policy. During the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit, Vice President Kashim Shettima criticized presidential candidates Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar. Shettima dismissed Obi’s economic proposals as being based on 'dubious statistics' and argued that Atiku Abubakar lacks the necessary skill set to manage a modern economy, specifically citing his educational background in sanitation.
In response to Shettima, Atiku Abubakar’s campaign council questioned President Bola Tinubu’s educational credentials, specifically regarding his graduation timeline from Government College Lagos. Meanwhile, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has endorsed President Tinubu for a second term, defending the removal of the petrol subsidy as a courageous and necessary reform despite current economic hardships.
On the opposition side, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) held a National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja. The gathering, which included Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, focused on campaign strategies and the inauguration of the party’s National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections. Additionally, Iyabo Obasanjo dismissed rumors of a political alliance with Peter Obi, reaffirming her support for President Tinubu.
