Iyabo Obasanjo seeks return to Nigerian Senate

Iyabo Obasanjo, the former Senator for Ogun Central and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has announced her intention to return to the Senate. After a 15-year hiatus from elective politics, she is running as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the 2027 elections.

Speaking in Abeokuta during the PDP campaign launch for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, Obasanjo stated that her return is motivated by a desire to restore the development and representation levels seen during her previous tenure from 2007 to 2011. She expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived decline in the district’s progress under subsequent representatives.

Obasanjo previously had a brief stint with the All Progressives Congress (APC) before returning to the PDP. The campaign event also featured Ladi Adebutu, the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, who emphasized poverty reduction as a primary goal for the party.
