Iyanla Vanzant apologizes to R. Kelly for community abandonment

Spiritual adviser and life coach Iyanla Vanzant has issued an apology to imprisoned R&B singer R. Kelly, stating that elders within the Black community failed to support and guide him. During an interview on The Jason Lee Show, Vanzant expressed regret for ignoring his pain and abandoning him, suggesting that community leaders and those profiting from his success did not intervene despite his personal struggles.

Vanzant specifically highlighted Kelly’s reported illiteracy, questioning why those around him did not provide basic educational support, such as teaching him to read. She argued that the wider community, including influential figures, turned their backs on him. While Vanzant’s comments address the perceived failure of community mentorship, they do not excuse the sex crimes for which Kelly is currently serving a 30-year federal prison sentence.
