İzmir and El Salvador agree on joint friendship projects

The deputy mayor of İzmir, Dr. Zafer Levent Yıldır, met with El Salvador’s ambassador Héctor Enrique Jaime Calderón at the city’s open‑working office. Both sides discussed expanding cooperation in tourism, sports and commercial activity, and explored symbolic projects such as a shared park, statue, street or boulevard that would underline the friendship between the two regions. Calderón highlighted the recent boost in investment and tourism in El Salvador following its security policies and suggested joint surf‑related events linking La Libertad with İzmir. The İzmir delegation, including General Secretary Zeki Yıldırım and Foreign Relations chief Selin Sayın Kapancı, welcomed the proposals and pledged to work on the initiatives.

The talks also referenced existing symbolic sites – Turkey Park in San Salvador, which houses a bust of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and El Salvador Park in Ankara, featuring a bust of diplomat Dr. José Gustavo Guerrero – as models for future collaborative landmarks.
