İzmir and UK discuss clean energy and waste management cooperation
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and representatives from the United Kingdom met to discuss potential cooperation in the fields of environment, energy, and local governance. The meeting, hosted by Deputy Mayor Dr. Zafer Levent Yıldır, included UK Consul General in Istanbul David Reed and municipal officials.
A primary focus of the discussions was the management of solid waste and its conversion into energy. General Secretary Zeki Yıldırım highlighted İzmir’s interest in adopting technological expertise from the UK, specifically noting London’s experience in environmentally friendly waste disposal and waste-to-energy processes.
Beyond waste management, the parties discussed expanding cooperation in renewable energy sectors, such as wind and solar power. Consul General David Reed noted that while private sector collaborations in clean energy are already underway between British and Turkish companies, there are significant opportunities to strengthen ties through local government partnerships.
