Izmir Clock Tower celebrates 125 years of history

The historic Izmir Clock Tower in Konak Square remains a primary destination for domestic and international tourists. Built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II's accession to the throne, the tower's foundation was laid on July 1, 1900, under the leadership of Izmir Governor Kıbrıslı Kamil Paşa. It was officially opened on September 1, 1901.

Designed by French architect Raymond Charles Péré, the 25-meter-tall, four-story structure features an orientalist style that synthesizes Ottoman and North African architectural motifs. A notable feature is its mechanical clock, which was gifted to Sultan Abdulhamid II by German Emperor Wilhelm II as a symbol of diplomatic relations.

The tower survived a severe earthquake in 1974, which caused damage and caused the clock to stop at 02:04. Following restoration efforts, the clock was returned to working order.
