Izmir entrepreneur transforms mussel shell waste into artificial reefs

Entrepreneur and industrial designer Nermin Sena Özger has developed a project in Izmir that transforms waste mussel shells into artificial reefs. The initiative aims to repurpose tons of organic waste while creating new habitats for marine life.

Supported by TÜBİTAK and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Global Cleantech Entrepreneurship Program, Özger established a company within Teknopark Izmir. She collects shells from mussel businesses and export facilities, converting them into a water-resistant material.

In the initial phase, approximately 3 tons of mussel shells were upcycled to produce four artificial reef prototypes. These prototypes were purchased by İZDENİZ AŞ, a subsidiary of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, and deployed in Telgraf Bay in the Seferihisar district. Ongoing diving inspections are being conducted to monitor the reefs' contribution to the marine ecosystem.
