İzmir implements controlled management for excavation soil
The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality is implementing a controlled management system for excavation soil generated by urban development and infrastructure projects to prevent environmental damage. Coordinated by the Egeşehir AŞ Environmental Protection and Control Directorate, the initiative aims to stop the illegal dumping of soil in agricultural lands, riverbeds, and forested areas, which can lead to soil and water pollution.
A key component of this effort is the Kemalpaşa Sütçüler Excavation Soil Storage Site, which was transferred from the General Directorate of Forestry for a five-year period. This 154,743-square-meter facility has accepted approximately 1,086,300 tons of soil via 42,263 vehicles since November 2025.
The municipality utilizes an Excavation Management Information System to track the source, quantity, and transport details of materials. Security measures include license plate recognition and camera inspections at weigh stations to verify the quality of the loads. If hazardous materials are detected under the soil, the vehicles are rejected and sent back.
