Turkey advances earthquake resilience through AI and new decision support systems

Turkey is advancing various technological and academic initiatives to improve earthquake preparedness and resilience, particularly in the Izmir region.

way the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is developing the İZMİR-SAFE system, a GIS-based decision support platform. This system analyzes building damage, road accessibility, and infrastructure such as water and sewage to model potential earthquake scenarios and refine emergency response plans. Additionally, a comprehensive Earthquake Master Plan is being coordinated by Dokuz Eylül University to create a long-term roadmap for urban resilience.

Academic institutions are also contributing through advanced research. Yaşar University is utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning to create high-resolution seismic hazard maps, combining classical engineering models with AI to better understand local soil variations. Meanwhile, engineering students from Katip Çelebi University achieved international recognition by winning first place at the EERI SDC 2026 competition in the United States for their innovative earthquake-resistant building design.

Experts emphasize the critical role of early warning systems, which can provide vital seconds to trigger automated safety protocols for electricity and gas infrastructure. These efforts aim to shift focus from reactive post-disaster response to proactive risk reduction and urban planning.
