Izmir Mayor Cemil Tugay Refutes AKP Switch Rumors

Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay, who resigned from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on 18 June, has repeatedly denied reports that he will join the Justice and Development Party (AKP). He said, “I will never betray this country” and stressed that his resignation was driven by opposition to the party’s “absolute nullity” governance, not by ideology.

Tugay met workers of the state‑owned construction firm IZBETON at its Bornova site, thanked them for their effort and reiterated his commitment to serve Izmir independently of any party affiliation. He emphasized that he will continue his mayoral duties without compromise and will not allow any wrongdoing in municipal services.

CHP Izmir provincial leader Utku Gümrükçü also commented, stating that Tugay belongs to the CHP and is unlikely to switch to the AKP, reinforcing the mayor’s own denials.
