İzmir advances transportation through metro maintenance and overpass construction
Infrastructure projects and maintenance efforts are underway in İzmir to improve urban transportation. İzmir Metro AŞ is conducting regular maintenance and repairs on 195 escalators and 85 elevators across 24 stations. General Manager Ahmet Sinan Karakuzu stated that heavy maintenance is performed by internal technical teams, while periodic checks are conducted by the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers. The system maintains an average daily active rate of 93 percent for these facilities.
Simultaneously, the Şemikler Vehicle Overpass Project has resumed following a revision to address soil liquefaction risks in the region's active earthquake zone. Developed in collaboration with Ege University, the project involves soil improvement to ensure seismic compliance. Once completed, the 220-meter overpass will connect Karşıyaka Yalı Mahallesi with Şemikler Mahallesi, reducing a 5-kilometer travel route to just 1 kilometer and significantly decreasing transit times.
