YÖK investigates 23 foundation universities over tuition hikes

The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has launched an official investigation into 23 foundation universities regarding tuition fee increases for the 2026-2027 academic year. The probe follows numerous complaints and reports alleging that these institutions violated the legal cap on fee hikes.

According to a decision made by the YÖK General Assembly on July 8, 2026, tuition increases for students in years other than the preparatory and first year were limited to a maximum of 25 percent. The High Education Audit Board is now examining whether the fees announced by these universities and the actual amounts charged to students comply with this regulation and existing legislation. While the specific names of the 23 universities under investigation have not been released, YÖK President Erol Özvar previously emphasized the necessity of adhering to established procedures to prevent student victimization.
