Izmir Metropolitan Municipality demolishes 26 risky buildings for tunnel project
The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has completed the demolition of 26 buildings identified as high-risk within the impact zone of the Buca Onat Tunnel project. This infrastructure initiative aims to reduce travel time between the Buca and Bornova districts to just 10 minutes.
Technical inspections conducted by the municipality identified a total of 108 structures posing risks to life and property across five neighborhoods in the Konak district: Mehmet Akif, Saygı, Atamer, Çınartepe, and Millet. Out of these, the municipality reached agreements with the owners of 55 buildings through purchase or land-for-construction options based on appraised values. Of those settled cases, 26 have already been demolished by the Department of Road Construction, Maintenance, and Repair.
To ensure ongoing safety, the Dangerous Building Assessment Commission and the Department of Building Control conduct weekly observational inspections. Additionally, technical teams use instrumental measurements to monitor ground movements and structural shifts in the surrounding area.
