İzmir Metropolitan Municipality launches tech-driven crackdown on illegal waste dumping

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has launched a new technological surveillance network to prevent the illegal dumping of excavation and construction waste. Following a protocol signed with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the municipality has gained the authority to inspect waste and apply administrative sanctions under Environmental Law No. 2872.

The enforcement strategy utilizes a combination of 114 strategic cameras from the İzmir Transportation Center (İZUM), vehicle tracking systems, and high-resolution drones to monitor difficult terrain. An observation room tracks real-time movement through the Excavation Management Information System to oversee waste disposal processes.

In the first month of these intensified inspections, authorities issued administrative fines totaling 21,898,000 Turkish Lira. Officials stated that the primary goal of the initiative is to protect the region's natural environment, including agricultural lands, olive groves, water basins, and riverbeds, rather than simply collecting fines.
