Izmir municipal secondhand market draws strong public interest

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality launched a series of "Secondhand Market" events under the slogan "Izmir’de Paylaşımın En Güzel Hali". The first market opened on 21 July 2026 at the Hatay Covered Market in Konak and attracted a large number of residents. Organisers say the initiative aims to cut waste, support family budgets and boost community solidarity. Similar markets are scheduled to run throughout July in Gaziemir, Karabağlar and Buca.

Citizens praised the programme. Yasemin Pesenlioğlu said, "We want more of these markets – I shopped and will come back," while Rıfat Öcal added, "There are antique items here; we welcome all İzmirites." Participants highlighted both economic help and a social space, especially for retirees and housewives, noting the clean, respectful atmosphere.

The municipality’s effort is presented as a social‑economic service that recycles unused items into affordable goods while fostering neighbourhood interaction.
