Izmir neighborhood gardens aid recovery of woman with memory loss

Sevim Hanyalı, a former accountant, is using urban agriculture to aid her recovery from a brainstem hemorrhage suffered two years ago. Following the medical emergency, which left her with a 27 percent survival rate, Hanyalı experienced significant memory loss, including an inability to perform basic mathematical operations.

On the recommendation of her doctor to engage in activities like painting and gardening, Hanyalı joined the Kozağaç Neighborhood Garden in Buca, an initiative established by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The municipality's network of neighborhood gardens is designed to connect women with local production.

Hanyalı is currently cultivating winter vegetables and has expressed her intention to present her first harvest, specifically cauliflower, to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay.
