İzmit cafe assault: Defendant Sema K. arrested

A court in İzmit, Kocaeli, has ordered the arrest of Sema K. following a violent assault at a cafe on March 20, 2026. The incident occurred during the first day of Ramadan when Meryem Yıldırım and her son, Talha Kaan İzal, attempted to intervene after witnessing an individual being assaulted outside the establishment.

According to court proceedings and witness testimony, the group involved entered the cafe and engaged in verbal abuse. When Talha Kaan İzal requested that the group refrain from using profanity in the presence of women, a physical altercation ensued. Meryem Yıldırım sustained multiple facial fractures after being struck with a glass and an ashtray, while Talha Kaan İzal suffered cracked ribs.

During the second hearing at the 14th Criminal Court of First Instance, a witness testified that Sema K. struck Yıldırım's face against the ground and issued threats to kill her. While defendant Kürşat G. was previously arrested, the court has now expanded the number of detainees to include Sema K., citing strong suspicion of crime and the risk of evidence tampering.
