Izquierda Unida approves open primaries for government presidency candidates

Izquierda Unida has approved a new regulation for open primaries to select its candidates for the Presidency of the Government and for various electoral constituencies in upcoming general elections. The proposal was passed by the Federal Coordinator with 81% support and no votes against.

The primary process will involve a mix of online and in-person voting. Candidates must present their applications between October 14 and 23, with the official proclamation of candidates set for October 25. The internal campaign will take place from October 26 to 30, followed by voting from November 2 to 8. The final results will be announced on November 9.

Federal Coordinator Antonio Maíllo stated that the goal is to combine experience with generational renewal. This move comes as the organization negotiates with Sumar to build a ‘broad left front’ aimed at providing an alternative to the right and far-right. Maíllo indicated that he has ruled himself out as a potential candidate for the coalition.
