Izquierda Unida challenges local governance in Bailén and Avilés

In Bailén, Spain, the political group Izquierda Unida (IU) has denounced the abandonment of construction works at the local elderly residence. The site has remained inactive for seven months following a collapse in February and a subsequent subsidence in March. IU is demanding that the municipal government, led by the Partido Popular, release expert reports regarding the cause of the collapse and provide a clear timeline for the resumption of the project.

In Avilés, the political landscape has shifted following the decision by IU to break its coalition agreement with the PSOE. This rupture follows tensions regarding the management of the city's water service. IU has announced it will propose an independent external audit of the contract with Aguas de Avilés to investigate investment obligations. This move comes amid a legal dispute where the private partner, Veolia/Asturagua, has claimed a debt of 15.3 million euros due to alleged economic imbalances, while IU argues the company is reporting record profits and dividends.
