Izquierda Unida proposes democratic values training for Spanish police

Antonio Maíllo, the federal coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU), has proposed introducing mandatory training in democratic values within the academies for the National Police and Guardia Civil. Maíllo expressed concern regarding an increasing presence of agents he described as “deeply reactionary” within these security forces.

While acknowledging that public officials should not be forced to disclose their personal ideologies, Maíllo emphasized that all civil servants must operate within a “constitutional and democratic framework.” He suggested that recent practices have deviated from these norms. To address this, the political group, which is part of the Sumar coalition, is advocating for increased oversight, monitoring, and evaluation of training curricula to ensure a foundation in democratic culture.
