Izquierda Unida urges Spanish cybersecurity independence

The political coalition Izquierda Unida (IU), through its Sumar group, has submitted formal inquiries to the Spanish government regarding national security and digital sovereignty. The party is calling for a strategic response to what it describes as “unconventional hybrid warfare” by Morocco, specifically citing the mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta.

Key demands include the strengthening of Spanish cybersecurity companies and a reduction in technological dependence on the United States, Israel, and NATO. IU representatives Enrique Santiago, Francisco Sierra, and Félix Alonso have asked if the government will prioritize European and national technologies and if it will promote public or mixed-capital companies to avoid models like the American firm Palantir Technologies.

Additionally, the lawmakers are questioning the Ministry of Defense on whether it will revise armament procurement policies to decrease reliance on foreign powers and whether it will reassess the location of strategic NATO technological infrastructures within Spanish territory to protect digital sovereignty. The group also expressed skepticism regarding European Commission initiatives to combat disinformation on social media platforms like TikTok and Meta.
