Izumo City students partner with JAL for tourism ambassador training

Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture is conducting its “Child Tourism Ambassador Project,” an initiative where elementary and junior high school students act as ambassadors to promote their hometown during school trips. Since 2013, students have traveled to other regions to share the charms of Izumo, including local cuisine like Izumo Soba and landmarks such as Izumo Taisha, using specialized business cards and pamphlets.

This year, the city has launched a new collaboration with Japan Airlines (JAL) to provide preparatory training for the students. On September 8, a study session was held at Sada Junior High School, where students participated in role-playing exercises to practice approaching tourists and presenting local attractions. The program aims to help students deepen their connection to their hometown while building communication skills, including English proficiency when interacting with international travelers.

Following the session at Sada Junior High School, similar preparatory meetings are scheduled for Taki Junior High School and Minami Junior High School.
