J. J. McCarthy traded from Vikings to Giants for fifth-round pick

The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J. J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. The trade follows a season-ending knee injury to Giants starter Jaxson Dart.

McCarthy, a former 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, struggled to secure the starting role in Minnesota after falling behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz on the depth chart. In his 10 games with the Vikings, he posted a 6-4 record but completed 57.6 percent of his passes.

In New York, McCarthy will wear No. 18, as No. 9 is already occupied by tight end Isaiah Likely. Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy reported that McCarthy has impressed during practice. He is expected to serve as a backup to veteran Jameis Winston, though Winston expressed a willingness to mentor the younger quarterback.

The Vikings move provides them with significant cap space and salary relief for the upcoming seasons, while the Giants gain an insurance policy at the quarterback position for the remainder of the regular season.
