J. K. Rowling criticized for sharing photo of trans woman

Author J. K. Rowling has faced criticism following a post on X involving a photograph of Freda Wallace, a transgender political commentator and podcast host. The image, taken from an angle that showed beneath Wallace’s skirt while she was seated, was shared by Rowling as part of a thread discussing previous posts by Wallace.

Rowling’s caption included a comment regarding Wallace’s refusal to debate her, stating, “To demonstrate that I have no resentment and that Fred relates to some lucky women, here is a photo of him debating.” The post has drawn backlash from users who questioned the appropriateness of sharing such an image, specifically noting the difference in how such a photo might be perceived if the subject were a cisgender woman.

The incident follows a 2023 debate organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs titled “Does transgender ideology threaten liberal values?”, which featured Wallace, Helen Joyce, and human rights activist Peter Tatchell.
