J.League shifts season start to August to boost player health and align with Europe

The J.League announced that from the 2026‑27 season the league will move its opening from February to August, adopting an autumn‑spring calendar. Chairman Yoshikazu Nonomura said the change is aimed at reducing heat‑related fatigue, improving player performance in the October‑November period and easing transfers to European clubs. He noted, “From the players’ perspective, a later start makes it easier to play and avoids damage caused by the summer heat.”

Alongside the schedule shift, the league will introduce new refereeing standards modeled on those used at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The revised rules limit time‑wasting, set strict time limits for throw‑ins and goal‑kicks, and seek to allow fair contact to continue without unnecessary whistles, while enhancing VAR oversight. JFA referee committee members emphasized that “the whistle will not be blown for non‑fouls” to keep the game flowing safely.

Club‑level effects are already visible. V‑Varen Nagasaki praised the shift as a “big transformation” for regional clubs, and Nara Club’s J3 side will host its first home match under the new schedule on 16 August, featuring accompanying fan events.
