J. M. Smucker reports sales growth and coffee profit surge

The J. M. Smucker Co. reported a 5% year-over-year increase in total net sales to $2.2 billion for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, ending July 31, 2026. Growth was largely driven by higher net pricing, particularly in the coffee segment, and favorable volume and mix in products like Uncrustables sandwiches.

The U.S. Retail Coffee segment saw a significant profit surge, with segment profit more than doubling to $300 million from $134.2 million in the previous year. This 124% increase in profitability was heavily influenced by approximately $115 million in tariff refunds and higher net pricing used to offset elevated costs. The segment's profit margin expanded to 37.1% from 18.7%.

In the pet food segment, net sales rose 1% to $371.7 million. While segment profit declined by 2% to $98.9 million due to increased marketing and higher costs, the division saw growth in cat food, specifically the Meow Mix brand, and a return to volume growth for Milk-Bone dog snacks. Pup-Peroni also saw a 5% increase in net sales.
