J. P. Hurlbert to play for University of Michigan after Red Wings selection

Detroit Red Wings first-round draft pick J. P. Hurlbert is set to begin his collegiate career at the University of Michigan. The Allen, Texas, native has a long-standing connection to the Red Wings organization, noting that a Red Wings jersey was the first he ever owned.

Hurlbert, a high-scoring forward, follows a developmental path similar to Red Wings player Dylan Larkin, who also played for the Wolverines before his NHL career. Hurlbert joins a highly competitive Michigan roster that includes prospects such as Landon DuPont, William Horcoff, and Michael Hage. The Wolverines are currently considered contenders for both the Big Ten and National Championships.
