Ja Rule Discusses $3 Million Tax Evasion and Prison Sentence

Rapper Ja Rule explained that he failed to report roughly $3 million in income, believing cash payments from live shows were not taxable. He described the practice of taking a portion of performance fees in cash while the remainder was processed through standard channels, a mistake he now admits was due to a lack of financial understanding.

The undeclared income led to federal and state tax‑evasion charges, resulting in a two‑year prison term in 2011 that ran concurrently with a state sentence for a gun charge. In a recent interview, Ja Rule took full responsibility, rejecting claims that an accountant caused the problem and warning others about proper income management.
