This shortage is forcing doctors to advise patients to purchase medications from private sources, placing a significant financial burden on those relying on free government healthcare schemes.

While hospital management has acknowledged the shortages, the underlying causes remain unclear. Potential factors include budget constraints, delays in the tendering process, supply chain disruptions, and failures to submit timely indents. Under current regulations, hospitals should submit requirements for a three-month supply before stocks run out to prevent such interruptions.

In Madhya Pradesh, medicine procurement occurs at two levels: centralized purchasing through Bhopal and a provision allowing hospitals to conduct up to 20 percent of purchases locally to address immediate needs.
