Jabiru count reveals nine active nests and 19 chicks in Costa Rica wetlands
A national monitoring effort by the Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED) confirmed nine active jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) nests and 19 chicks during the 2026 breeding season in Costa Rica’s wetlands. The study, part of the long‑running "Ecology and Conservation of the Jabiru in Costa Rica" project, estimated a minimum population of 148 individuals by reviewing historic nesting sites and conducting simultaneous counts in the Tempisque and Frío river basins.
Researchers also recorded a temporary influx of about 100 non‑breeding jabirus at Laguna Jicote in May, underscoring the wetlands’ role as an important stopover habitat. The findings highlight the species as an indicator of wetland health and point to ongoing threats such as habitat loss, tree‑cutting, fires, irresponsible tourism and climate change, with over 75 % of nests located on private lands.
Professor Johnny Villarreal Orias emphasized that each breeding season provides valuable data for assessing the jabiru’s status and informing conservation actions.
