Jabloko opposition party barred from Russian parliamentary elections
The Russian Supreme Court has barred the liberal opposition party Jabloko from participating in the upcoming Duma parliamentary elections, scheduled for September 18–20. The decision follows a lawsuit filed by the pro-Kremlin Rodina party, which alleged that Jabloko violated copyright laws in its campaign materials and raised concerns regarding extremist activities and foreign funding.
Jabloko, which is noted as the only registered Russian party openly opposing the war in Ukraine, has filed an official appeal against the ruling. Party leader Nikolai Rybakov stated that the legal grounds for the exclusion are non-existent and asserted that the party intends to appear on the ballot.
The ruling was issued by Judge Vyacheslav Kirillov. Following the announcement, hundreds of supporters gathered outside the Supreme Court in Moscow to protest the decision. Experts and political analysts suggest the move may be part of a broader effort to consolidate political control and eliminate dissent ahead of the vote.
