Jablonec nad Nisou seeks barriers for high-risk railway crossing
The municipality of Jablonec nad Nisou is seeking the installation of barriers at a high-risk railway crossing on Revoluční Street. The crossing currently relies solely on light signals, which drivers frequently ignore.
Since the beginning of the year, two collisions between trains and passenger cars have occurred at this location, resulting in five injuries, three of which were serious. In one April incident, firefighters had to extricate victims from a demolished vehicle. A second collision in August caused significant injuries and disrupted rail traffic for over four hours.
Local authorities have installed surveillance cameras to monitor the area. Footage has captured various safety violations, including a driver running a red light in a Mercedes and cyclists riding against traffic. The crossing is located on the Jizerskohorské železnice, a busy line serving approximately 2,000 passengers daily.
Správa železnic is currently negotiating the inclusion of this crossing in its investment plans. The organization has allocated approximately one billion CZK in its current budget to modernize 93 crossings across the national network, with 51 of those slated for increased security levels.
