Jack Henry Curtin charged with murder and arson in Canberra

Jack Henry Curtin, 27, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on September 8, charged with the murder of 46-year-old Kylee McHugh and arson. Prosecutors allege that Curtin murdered Ms. McHugh at her Belconnen apartment on Osborne Place before setting the unit on fire in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Emergency services responded to the fire at the Wallcliffe Flats unit around 6:40 am on May 18, 2026. However, a preliminary autopsy suggested that Ms. McHugh died from injuries to her neck before the fire began, noting a lack of carbon monoxide in her blood. Investigators identified five distinct ‘seats’ of the fire within the home, including the bedroom where the body was located.

CCTV footage reportedly placed Curtin in the vicinity of the apartment during the timeframe of the alleged murder. During the court appearance, the defense applied for bail, citing Curtin’s family commitments, medical conditions affecting his vision, and the availability of stable accommodation with his parents. The prosecution opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the potential risk of evidence interference.
