Jack Smith addresses Hashim Thaçi prosecution during Senate hearing
During a U.S. Senate hearing regarding his investigations into Donald Trump, former Special Counsel Jack Smith was questioned by Republican Senator Eric Schmitt about his professional history, specifically his tenure in The Hague.
Senator Schmitt asked if Smith had lost major cases during his career and suggested that his work prosecuting former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi in 2020 was a fallback after such losses. Smith responded by noting that Thaçi was convicted for over 300 counts of torture and 96 murders. Smith explicitly denied Schmitt’s implication that his work in The Hague was a strategic move to pivot back to investigations involving Donald Trump, stating, “That is not true at all.”
